On April 3, 2012, Marion Barry, former Mayor of Washington, DC and now a Ward 8 D.C. Councilman had some really racist things to say about Asian businesses in his Ward: “We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops. They ought to go. I’m going to say that right now. But we need African-American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too.”(1)
Ward 8 is one of the poorest districts in the city. Barry attempted to explain his racist remark with a reporter from reason.tv.
Reporter: Why do you get all racial with the businesses?
Barry: What racial?
Reporter: With the Asians and the dirty shops?
Barry: That’s not racial.
Reporter: How is that not racial?
Barry: I’m not going to go through it if you don’t understand it.
Barry then blames everything on segregation, discrimination and cultural differences.
He then says that 95% of the carryouts in Ward 8 are owned or managed by Asians.
Reporter: So?
Barry: I’m finished with that.

And the one idea is, how we are going to exterminate white people because that, in my estimation, is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate white people off the face of the planet, to solve this problem.”(Applause) “Now I don’t care whether you clap or not, but I’m saying to you, that we need to solve this problem, because they are going to kill us. And I will leave on that so we have to just set up our own system and stop playing and get very serious and not be diverted from coming up with a solution to the problem and the problem on the planet is white people.” (Applause)
(Most of the blacks in the lightly attended meeting applauded Kambon and the emcee commented: “Be hard to follow that one. You can get as black as you want I don’t know if you get that....” Emcee stops when approached by a member of the panel.
